PININO - BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

2014

♦ James Suckling 90 points

A juicy and chewy 2014 Brunello. Tar, walnut and berry character with honts of dried meat. Medium to full body. Flavourful finish. Drink now

♦ Jancis Robinson 16 points

A just mid ruby with bricky tinges. Very tight and closed on the nose, yet with brooding, mineral intensity. Ripe, soft and open-knit strawberry palate with a tangy tannic note on the finish. Unpolished and immediate.

♦ Wine Advocate-Robert Parker 91 points

Here is a steady and clean expression of Sangiovese. Although the 2014 Brunello di Montalcino does not open to big intensity, it does dole out its fruit and spice aromas with careful balance and measured succession. It all makes sense considering the rather subdued and mild personality of this vintage. This is a thin and graceful espression to drink within the next 10 years.

There’s clarity and beauty to this young Brunello with bright-cherry and crushed-stone character on the nose. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a beautiful finish. Tight and focused. Drink or hold.

♦ Vinous – Antonio Galloni 91 points

Bright red. Perfumed red berry, strawberry, violet and cinnamon on the enticing nose. Enters Juicy and perfumed, then tight and increasingly austere as the high acidity and noteworthy tannic bite keep the fresh red fruit flavors under wraps. Finishes long and clean. This will undoubtedly improve with a little bottle age and will show best with food. It’s a lovely, perfumed Brunello, but I would have liked a touch more ripe fruit; still, this steely wine is very much in the style of the year. (Ian D’Agata)

Pinino's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino shows savory characteristics with a dark and meaty quality of primary fruit. You get pressed cherries and prune. You also get exotic spice, toasted espresso bean and grilled herb. There is a moment of bitter astringency on the close that may need a few more years of bottle aging before it irons itself out.

Tasted blind. Deep ruby with orange tinges. Spicy nose with hints of fruit cake and marasca cherry. Plenty of ripe cherry and fruit cake on the palate with stalky tannins. Well balanced and direct. Drink now.

Pinino’s 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is a big, powerfull wine. Sweet tobacco, dried cherries, licorice, smoke and dried flowers are front and center. The 2011 comes across as quite forward in its flavor profile, yet it has enough depth to drink well for at least a few years. Although not especially finessed, the 2011 offers good immediacy to match its somewhat burly, rustic personality.

Pinino’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino sees fruit sourced from the northern half of appellation near the Montosoli single-vineyard. The wine opens to medium consistency and pretty ruby color with dark garnet hues. It takes a few minutes to start its engines, but once it does it operates with a slow, steady pace that promises longevity over immediacy. This cellar-worthy Brunello should continue its evolution over the next ten years. The tannins are tight, but they already deliver attractive silkness on the long finish. This promises to be a very enjoyable wine after 2017.

2009

♦ Wine Advocate 02/2014 90 points
The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is tight and reserved at first with immediate signs of oak spice and toast (it ages 30 months in Slavonian oak). But once it revs up in the glass, it makes a compelling argument for the vintage. The fruit is on the ripe side, but only slightly so. In fact, it delivers a large spectrum of berry flavors backed by lithe endnotes of cola and licorice. I especially enjoyed the tight, compact nature of the mouthfeel that gets right to the point and lingers long enough to keep your interest. Drink: 2015 -2022. Located in the northern part of the denomination, Pinino is a partnership between two families, one Austrian (Hannes und Andrea Gamon) and one Spanish (Silvia and Max Hernandez). Together they make wine with the very talented consulting winemaker Paolo Vaggagini.

Then 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is a gorgeous, fleshy wine endowed with considerable depth and richness. Ripe red cherries, flowers, mint, spices and licorice are woven together nicely in this sumptuous Brunello. Crushed flowers and a hint of tobacco linger on the finish. The 2007 is already quite showy today and is likely to offer its best drinking relatively early. This is a highly attractive Brunello from Pinino. The 2007 spent 30 months in Slavonian oak casks. Pinino’s 2006 Brunello di Montalcino reveals plenty of depth and richness in its red fruit. Today the tannins are a bit raw, so the wine is best left to rest another few years in the cellar. Sweet, floral notes add lift and freshness on the firm yet textured finish. There seems to be enough juciness and purity in the fruit to support aging. The estate’s Brunello is aged in cask. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.
